Henry Kam Chow Chung
Born: 03/13/1907, Honolulu, OA, Hawaii Died: 12/29/1972, Honolulu, OA, Hawaii Cause of Death: Colon Cancer Henry Kam Chow Chung, known as "Uncle Ah Chow," to my branch of the family, was the 6th born child of See Hin Chung and Kam Lan Tom. Like most of his siblings, we think that Henry attended and graduated from McKinley High School (although the 1940 census stats that his highest grade completed was 8th grade). The 1930 United States Federal Census lists Henry's occupation as a Tile Setter for a construction company. In the 1940 census, his occupation is listed as laborer for the US Army. More specific information from his 1940 WWII Draft Registration Card, indicates that Uncle Ah Chow worked as a "Constructing Quartermaster" at Hickam Field. Some time between 1940 and 1945, Henry met his wife, Hazel Sayo Nakasone. She was born and raised in Maui, so I am not sure when and how their paths crossed. By 1945, Henry and Hazel had their first child, Carol. In 1949 their second child, Guy, was born and in 1956, their last child, Linda, was born. The following employment records were found: 1953-1958: US Army Pacific 1959-1969: Clerk at Fort Shafter I am not sure if Henry worked as a civilian for the Army, or if he was enlisted. I have a feeling that he was employed as a civilian. In 1969, Henry's wife's employment is listed as "waitress" at The Shindig. Henry passed away in December of 1972 due to colon cancer. His wife, Hazel, survived 39 years after his death and passed in 2011. |
