Joseph Jerves and Irene Chung |
Irene Kam Yau Chung
Born: 01/25/1901, Honolulu, Hawaii Died: 02/1980, Kauai, Hawaii Cause of Death: Cancer (unknown type) Irene Kam Yau Chung was the fourth-born child of See Hin Chung and Kam Lan Tom. Irene was born on January 25, 1901. I found another record, however, that stated that she was born on January 17, 1903. It seems remarkable to me (although, perhaps I am making assumptions) that Irene went to college. She was, after-all, the daughter of immigrant parents of meager means and a woman of college age in the 1920s. Despite the odds, Irene did go to college and graduated from the University of Hawaii with a teaching degree. She took a job teaching at Kalaheo School, which was an elementary school in Kauai. Irene's decision to accept a teaching job in Kauai would cause her to cross paths with her future husband, Joseph Santos Jerves, a man of Portuguese descent. Joseph and Irene married and eventually had two daughters together, Jacqueleen Blanche Jerves and Winnifred Elaine Jerves. Her daughter Winnifred went to college at the University of Hawaii. Sadly, Winnifred was diagnosed with brain cancer and passed away at the young age of 34. Irene and her husband lived in Kauai their entire lives together. Joseph was described as an entrepreneur. Apparently, the couple owned income properties and also owned a restaurant where they sold Saimin. Irene passed away in February of 1980. |
