Harriet Kam Mee Chung
Born: 06/29/1909, Honolulu, OA, Hawaii Died: April 5, 1976, Honolulu, OA, Hawaii Cause of Death: Lung Cancer Harriet was the 7th born child of See Hin Chung and Kam Lan Tom. She attended and graduated from McKinley High School. After high school, she met and married her husband, Ah Ung Lum in 1934. Her husband worked for Hawaiian Electric utility company and Harriet stayed home and took care of the house and the children. Harriet and her husband had three children: Janice, Gwendolyn and Alvin. Harriet loved to read and do hand-work. She made beautiful afghan blankets that she would give away to family and friends. Later, she learned how to knit as well. Harriet is described by her children as loving, warm and gentle. She was always eager to help and was generous with her time. Harriet was especially close with her sister Irene, who would stay with her on her trips home from Kauai'i. Harriet's daughter Gwendolyn remembers overhearing a conversation between the two sisters about her choosing between two American names. She, of course, chose Harriet. Her brother John, would later give his daughter, Maxine, her namesake (Maxine Harriet Chung). Harriet succumbed to lung cancer in April of 1976. This was just two months after the death of her brother, Kam Lum. Harriet is survived today by two of her children, two grandchildren and four great grandchildren. |
